Memory Foam Toppers

Memory foam toppers are a layer of memory foam you add to the top of an existing mattress. This can help improve the comfortably of the mattress. However, it is not a fix for a bad mattress. Generally, memory foam toppers come in thicknesses of 2 to 4 inches. The density often ranges from 2 to 5 lbs.

History

Memory foam was originally developed by NASA in 1966. The idea was to use them to make better cushions for the space are crafts. In the 1980's, NASA released memory foam into the public domain. But, due to difficulties in manufacturing, it wasn't until 1991 the first memory foam mattress was produced. Eventually, memory foam toppers were to follow.

It would also be used in many medical settings. Commonly it was used on patients who were required to lay on a firm mattress for unhealthy periods of time. The pressure caused by sleeping on these mattresses for long, unhealthy periods of time would cause reduced or stop blood flow or gangrene. Memory foam greatly reduced the number of cases.

The Basics

Memory foam toppers are great for adding extra comfort to an existing bed. Since its memory foam, it will contour to your body, greatly reducing pressure points and relieving pain. Though, a step up from a traditional spring mattress, wont provide the same comfort and benefits of a memory foam mattress. Since the toppers is only as good as the bed its used on, its generally preferred to just replace the mattress all together.
